Open space, village governance, community events, sustainability — what it means to live here, not just recreate here.
For 55 years, Columbia Association has stewarded the open space, programs, and community infrastructure that make Columbia one of the most livable places in America — and we're just getting started.
Columbia Association is a nonprofit community organization — but that description undersells what we actually do. We manage 43 facilities, 3,600 acres of open space, and a full calendar of community programs serving every stage of life.
We're funded by assessments on Columbia property — which means every dollar we generate goes back into the community we serve. No shareholders. No outside investors. Just Columbia.
Columbia Association touches daily life in Columbia in ways that most people never fully realize. Here's what CA actually manages, maintains, and makes available to this community.
From competitive swim meets to senior fitness classes to village elections — CA is the connective tissue of Columbia community life.
In 1967, developer James Rouse set out to build a city that proved people of all backgrounds could live well together — with open space protected by covenant, villages designed for human scale, and community infrastructure built into the city's DNA. Columbia Association was created to steward that vision. Everything CA does today traces back to that original intention.

Columbia was designed with democratic governance built in. Each of Columbia's ten villages elects its own board representatives, and residents have a direct voice in how CA operates and invests. That's not a feature of a commercial gym — it's the structure of a community that takes itself seriously.
Village elections are open to all Columbia residents. Board meetings are public. If you live here, you have a say in how this community evolves.
